Do you realize a phenomenon that most Muslims in Indonesia commonly send messages or emails or even update their statues on facebook to greet and welcome the holy month Ramadhan by asking apologies to the other Muslims? Are you the one who experienced it? This phenomenon also happens before Idul Fitri, as a sign of accomplishing fasting during Ramadhan. Including me, I also accustomed to sending a message to my relatives, colleagues, and others to express my happiness that holy month Ramadhan has been commenced. Besides, I do apology for other Muslims as my sign of love and affection to them as well. As the consequence, those who are asked apology by someone have a responsibility to forgive them sincerely. Yet, the fact shows that some of us still are reluctant to forgive somebody mistakes because of certain reasons. Then, how do we realize that Islam prescribes the concept of forgiving to the Muslims?
None in the world is free from mistakes. Whoever they are, they must make mistakes. Muhammad, the messenger, (peace be upon him) preaches that every single person in the world has mistake and the best among them is hose who realize his/her mistakes and apologizes to Allah swt. It means that a good person (in the world) is not the one who never does a mistake, but those who realizes his mistakes and apologizes to Allah swt. and promises not to do the same mistakes.
In the line with that, Islam has prescribed that being able to forgive others mistake is one of the characteristics of a pious person. As stated in QS. Al-Imran: 133-134 that “be quick (speed up, rush, compete) in the race for forgiveness from the creator of heaven and earth and for paradise whose width is that (of the whole) heavens and the earth prepare for the pious people. Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger and pardon all mankind; for Allah loves those who do goodness.” from these verses, it can be concluded that Allah swt will much appreciate those who want to forgive others mistake by providing them heaven and Allah swt also promises that they will be happy there hereafter.
In literal meaning, apology is a written or spoken expression of one’s regret, remorse, or sorrow for having insulted, failed, injured, or wronged. Asking and giving apology are good behaviors. Islam prescribes its adherents to forgive each other’s and assign the person who forgives others mistakes in the high position. In line with Islam’s doctrine above, the elders said that those who realize his/her mistakes and asking apology are knight while those who forgive others are high-minded ones. Rasulullah saw also said that the one of the main morals person who has done a mistake to him (H.R. Ahmad,Al-Hakim dan Al-Baghawy).
Quraish Shihab explains that apology comes from Al-Quran word ‘alafwu’ which is similar to ‘erase’. For those who forgive others mistakes it means that has already erased his/her wound in his own heart. Therefore, if there wound in his heart, he does not forgive others mistake, he just restrains his anger. So as a Muslim, forgiving by having no wound in heart will lead into happiness and that is the real essence of forgiving.
Indeed, Rasulullah saw has exemplified to his adherents how he used to forgive people who hurt him during his life. For example, rasulullah came back from Medina to Mecca to meet the Quraisy. Rasululllah did not bring retaliation for his enemies, and he did not want to retake Mecca from other people just for desire, but he brought peaces for all Mecca’s citizens. Rasulullah clearly remembered how the Quraisy always hurt him by triying to kill him and throwing him with trashes and stones, hurt his loyal adherents, but there was just no space in his heart for hatred to those who had hurt him. On the other hand, he forgave all quraisy for all the fault addressed to him. The prophet forgave people who had threatened his safety. he is a forgivable person, even Allh swt. So why do some of us reluctant to forgive others mistake?
Finally, this is the appropriate time to re-contemplate and take action to forgive those who have done some mistakes to us. Let’s gone be by gone and open new era in our life by keeping our brotherhood. Let’s follow what our big prophet has exemplified to us. Hopefully we are included to those who are lucky and being part of his adherent. :)
